Eighty years ago--the year this photo of me was taken--the right to vote for women was established only eighteen years before. Except for marriage, little girls like me had few expectations for their futures. You were lucky if you were pretty--everybody thought so. That's Aunt Mary showing me how to powder my nose.

There was a little girl,
  Who had a little curl,
Right in the middle of her forehead.
  When she was good,
  She was very good indeed,
But when she was bad she was horrid.

--Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
I had a little curl and I was horrid.
That's where this story begins.
