By 1939, the year this photo was taken of one-year-old of Karen, American women had been allowed the vote for only eighteen years. Except for marriage, little girls like her had few expectations for their futures. Girls were lucky if they were pretty--everybody thought so. That's Aunt Mary showing Karen how to powder her nose.

There was a little girl,
  Who had a little curl,
Right in the middle of her forehead.
  When she was good,
  She was very good indeed,
But when she was bad she was horrid.

--Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
She had a little curl and was horrid.
That's where this story begins.
